In September 2016 Canon Mike Booker gathered together a small group for a big idea. St. Mary’s had suffered the cost of having roof lead stolen – twice! With new lead, a new security system – a combined expense of nearly £20,000 covered by a loan which must be repaid – could we pull together all the people who love our Church – Friends of St. Mary’s Church Comberton – and raise the necessary funds?
To represent both Church and Village, four ‘First Trustees’ – David Hughes – Chairman, Richard Elleray – Treasurer, Godfrey Curtis and John Crang (as the ex officio Parochial Church Council member) have been meeting. A bank account – “ Friends of St. Mary’s Church Comberton ” has been opened – and we have received Charitable Trust Status by HMRC. This will allow us to claim Gift Aid (see donations page for details).
By the beginning of June 2017, circa £5000 has been raised.
We estimate we will need to raise well over £30,000 in the next 5 years because there are more expenses to come. In 2014 the official 5 year Inspection of Church and Churchyard identified a list of repair work necessary for the up-keep of the Church fabric (which means the Buildings and Fixtures). Most of that work has yet to be started.
The Inspectors return in 2019.
